The Premedical Postbaccalaureate Program is a one-year academic program for motivated, recent college graduates from educationally and socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds seeking to improve their academic preparation for medical school.
The program's key components include:
- Full-time enrollment in upper-division science courses for one academic year.
- Enhancement of critical thinking skills, test-taking, and study skills.
- Structured MCAT preparation course.
- Seminars on health disparities and the health system.
- Guidance through the AMCAS application and medical school interview process.
In addition, each student receives individual advising and writes a learning agreement each academic term to set goals and create a personalized experience.
Students are expected to achieve a GPA of 3.5 or better in their upper division science courses. Upon successful completion of the academic components of the program, staff will provide on-going advising to postbaccalaureate students during the medical school application process.
Summer Program: Study Skills and MCAT Prep
The summer component consists of a MCAT review course, problem solving skills workshops, and interactive instruction in learning skills. Workshops address verbal reasoning, time and stress management, note taking, studying, and test taking.
Participants enroll full time at UC Riverside in rigorous upper division science coursework. These courses, taught during the fall, winter and spring quarters, are specifically selected to demonstrate the strengths of each participant's profile. Attention is placed on addressing weaknesses in a student's preparatory background and in demonstrating success in a challenging academic environment. Each participant, in close consultation with program advisors, selects the course load. It is expected that students will maintain a 3.5 or better GPA in their selected courses. Additionally, throughout the academic year students attend seminars on health care.
Advising on the AMCAS Application Process
Since creating an application that stands out is a critical factor in the success of a medical school application, we work closely with students on their AMCAS and secondary applications. The summer and academic year component includes workshops on personal statements, AMCAS activity descriptions, school selection, secondary questions and interviews. In addition to workshops, individual advising is provided throughout the application process. A detailed letter of recommendation is provided for each student who successfully completes the postbaccalaureate program.
Please note: The program is completely independent from the application process for admission into the UCR School of Medicine. Students in our program do not receive preferential treatment in the application process to the UCR School of Medicine.
